There are several ways to get a cleaner selection without accidentally selecting the ears/hair/etc. The easiest way is to get your main selection using the Magic Wand, and then cleaning it up a bit using the Rectangular Marquee Tool (since all we need is a rough selection, not a precise one), by pressing the Alt key and selecting the areas you don’t want, using the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Or pressing the Shift key and selecting the areas you do want.
